  Although this image is believed to be taken in Southampton, cottages like this with thatched roofs were very common in Wales before slate became more available. Thatching was the craft of building a roof with dry vegetation such as straw, water reed, sedge, rushes or heather. The idea was to layer the vegetation so as to shed water away from the inner roof. It's a very old roofing method and I really think that it gives the cottage a lot of character.
