After a few minutes of research I've found that this building has played quite an important role in the development of higher education in Australia, particularly NSW. What began as the Sydney Mechanics Institute in 1843 was renamed the Sydney Technical College in 1878. From the 1940's the college and surrounding buildings were involved in the establishment of both the University of New South Wales (UNSW) and the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), as they are known today. This building is now called Ultimo College, the largest campus of the Sydney Institute of TAFE (see www.sit.nsw.edu.au/ultimo/ for more info).
