From Wikipedia article for Willard Straight : "Straight married Dorothy Payne Whitney, a member of the prominent Whitney family, in 1911 after 5 years of courtship. They married in Geneva, Switzerland, and moved to China. They moved back to the United States in 1912, having judged it too unsafe due to the Chinese Revolution. In 1915, Straight, his wife and Herbert Croly began the publication of The New Republic, a weekly political magazine." Straight died in 1918. In 1922 she gave his estate to Cornell to construct a building at Cornell University named after Willard Straight. See cornellsun.com/node/26950 She didn't become Mrs L. K. Elmhirst until April 1925 -- which means that the lower caption can't have been added until then.

The current building is the third church on this site. The first was a slab structure, built in 1852, and moved to the current site when the early settlers moved to its current Maryborough location. A wooden church replaced the earlier structure and was dedicated on 27/5/1866. The Foundation stone of the current church was laid by Sir Arthur Kennedy in March 1878, with the church opened on 30/8/1879 by Bishop Hale and Bishop Stanton of North Queensland. The Bell Tower was built in 1887. The Church celebrated 130 years of worship on 6/9/2009 with Bishop Jonathan Holland presiding. The Foundation stone of the current church was laid by Sir Arthur Kennedy in March 1878. A plaque on the bell tower records: This Tower with Peal of Nine Bells was erected by the bereaved husband and children to the Honour and Glory of God and in memory of Mrs. Maria Aldridge, Late of Baddow House, Maryborough, a communicant of St Pauls Church. She was one of the earliest wives and mothers residents in the town: a conscientious Christian woman who through life was a peacemaker, ever forgiving, doing good, and helping all who were in trouble, distress, or affliction. Died 17th March 1886, aged 65 years, nearly 37 of which were spent in Maryborough. A plaque records: Heritage Site - This land was donated by Henry Palmer - and Edgar Aldridge for a church - C1856. To replace the first Church of - England then located at Baddow. The site - of the first settlement. This building was - erected in 1879 - The Bell Tower in 1887. "Willard Dickerman Straight (January 31, 1880 – December 1, 1918) was an American investment banker, publisher, reporter, diplomat and by marriage, a member of the Whitney family. He was a promoter of Chinese arts and investments, and a major supporter of liberal causes."

In 1914, Willard and Dorothy, together with Herbert Croly, began publication of The New Republic, a weekly political magazine that quickly became the voice of American liberalism. In 1917, they helped found Asia Magazine, a prominent academic journal on China.

In 1915, Straight left J.P. Morgan and went to work as a vice-president for American International Corporation. In that same year, Straight became involved with the Preparedness Movement and attended the July 1915 Citizens' Military Training Camp in Plattsburgh, New York. When the United States entered World War I two years later, Straight joined the United States Army. He served stateside and later in France with the Adjutant General's Corps and First Army. For his service, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal and served as a major."

"Following the death of Straight's good friend Henry Schoellkopf in 1912, Straight donated $100,000 (equivalent to $3,336,000 in 2025) to construct the Schoellkopf Memorial Hall in his honor. After his death, his wife made a substantial donation to Cornell to build the school's first student union building, Willard Straight Hall, which was named in his honor."
