Moore did many variations on "Reclining Figure." MOMA appears to have a 1938 version of Reclining Figure in cast lead (but does not show an image online). This does not look like lead to me. A 1939 version in elmwood (which looks very much like the image in the Bain photo in shape and is now in the Detroit Institute of Arts) is seen at www.henry-moore.org/works-in-public/world/united-states-o... www.theartsdesk.com/index.php?option=com_k2&view=item... shows a number of Reclining Figure variations, made over a long period, and in a variety of materials.

Looking at the hi-res TIFF, the Moore sculpture is definitely wood. So maybe the piece currently in Detroit was at MoMA in 1947. The elmwood Reclining Figure, 1939, has been part of a Moore retrospective at Tate Modern this summer and will travel to Toronto and some US cities, with other works currently in the Tate exhibition. Provenance information issued by the Tate, indicates: Gordon Onslow Ford purchased it from Moore in 1941; The Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit, current owner, purchased it from the Marlborough-Gerson Gallery, New York, 1965. So there is a gap in knowledge, but since Gordon Onslow Ford [ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gordon_Onslow_Ford ], was in New York in 1941, it is likely that the piece was too.I agree with maruteru that this is probably Moore's Reclining Figure, 1939.
