One of these performed the first actual rescue using a hoist on 29th of September 1945 when an oil barge with two seamen on board broke lose during a storm near the Sikorsky plant in Bridgeport Connecticut. Test Pilot Dimitry 'Jimmy ' Viner flew an R-5D (43-46642) in 65 mph winds and pulled both men to safety. The first rescue from a carrier was also by one of theses - now designated HOS3S-1 of Squadron HU-2 operating from the USS Leyte (CV-32) Ensign Robert Lynch plucked an F8F Bearcat pilot from the sea on 2nd of November 1948.
