It was a drunken Ledlie (sitting at left) who crossed the North Anna River near Ox Ford and foolishly ordered an assault on the bluffs held by Gen. William Mahone's division, where “Nothing whatever was accomplished, except a needless slaughter.” Later, at the Battle of the Petersburg Crater, Ledlie did not brief his troops beforehand, or lead, or even accompany, his men into battle. Instead, he was observed behind the lines in a bunker, drinking liquor. The result was over 500 Union deaths, and was called by Grant, who later dismissed Ledlie from the service for dereliction of duty, "the saddest affair I have witnessed in this war."
