  English-speakers may not understand the word 'girlguides' :-) It's girl scouts. Also, the slogan 'Heitje voor een karweitje', meaning 'a quarter for a job (done)', makes me wonder if people did actually pay these girls a quarter... or more :-)

  Girl Guides is OK in England - that's the official term here - see: www.girlguiding.org.uk/ (In my days in the Boy Scouts, there was "Bob-a-Job" Week - bob meaning one shilling, suggested payment for each job done. Don't know what inflation has done to that...)

  Sorry, I didn't know that term. I stand corrected :-) Thanks for letting me (everyone) know. However, as far as the quarter (of a guilder) is concerned... yes, there was a time when it was worth a lot more, and probably when the slogan originated; but at the time that this picture was taken, I know -- I grew up there and was a teen-ager then -- that you couldn't get much for that anymore.
