Great shot but looking at the line of litter along the bank they look like environmental vandals. Those Victorians certainly left a lot to be desired!!!

Ah, I'd guess that their sense of litter-buggery, or vandalism was different from our own! Wouldn't you? And that someone among them picked up the paper... which would have degraded in any case... Cut the auld guys a bit o' slack..

Richard Eric In all areas of our photographic collections, Richard. The Pic of the Day is the most straightforward, in that I'm searching for photos taken on a particular date. The other photos that are uploaded every day can be serendipitous finds; have subject matter that I hope will be interesting to all of you; photos that I know some of you will know a hell of a lot more about than we do, so that when you comment, we learn more and can add that information to our NLI catalogue. Some photos I happen on because of other projects that are going on here at the National Library. Sometimes it's as simple as the fact that I have seen a photo and love it (or because it makes me laugh), and I hope it'll have the same effect on others....

I used to live there, but I can't remember now is that Koenigswinter and the Drachenfels, Bad Honnef or Linz am Rhein.

Might even be Koblenz, now I think of it. Or the Lorelei.

the two seated characters at centre, are they backward seated into a bench on is one working on an artist's easel? pretty scene, the row boats have a distinctive raised prow

Mind you, see one German river and you've seen them all. It could as easily be Kufstein, where there is still a Hotel Goldener Loewe.

Difficulties in the construction of Teelin Pier were mentioned in the House of Commons, reported in Derry Journal - Monday 04 August 1884. It seems that part of it was constructed on hard bedrock, but a 20ft length was on softer material and had given way the pier ended up shorter than envisaged.

Construction must have finished by August 1883, because that's when the contractor was selling off all his stuff

From Bray Town Council's website: In 1932 the Eagles Nest ballroom and Café was built near the summit of the Head. The Eagles Nest was for many years the scene of popular dances and entertainment for locals and visitors alike. In 1946, Irish Holidays Limited bought the Eagles Nest and under the directions of Eamon Quinn built the Chairlift.

Whilst we are in Bray, does anyone know where "Clifton Villa" was, and if it is still there? I am trying to find information about a rellie who lived and died there in 1873 - paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&d=NZ... . Bray looks like a good place to be.

Obviously the Chairlift is not in this shot. I don't think the steps up to the Eagle's Nest are here either, but I haven't yet found out exactly when they were built.
