    Exactly correct; Cowardin Avenue. The church on the left is on the corner of Cowardin and Bainbridge and was St. Luke's Episcopal Church. It is now a Nation of Islam mosque.

    Do you know why the house would have been raised like that? It's not something I'd have expected in that part of the country.

    Houses that stood near a busy dirt road were typically raised. That kept so much dust from coming through the open windows in warm weather. Once paving was common, fewer houses were built with the elevated main floor because they were inconvenient, harder to heat and took extra material.

    Lu: Streets were graded in 1870's early 1880's to reduce the steeper grades on streets. House pictured originally had street higher and house to right was built after street grade was lowered. House pictured appears to date to before civil war. Some of these older houses ended up higher than street level and some ended up lower. Richmond has many houses like this one.
