I wonder if the photo was taken while Belgica was caught in the ice. I read on Wikipedia they were blocked for one year and they had to carve a waterway for the ship through thick layer of ice of 6 meter for a distance of 75 meters. Impressive !!

Yes, this picture was most likely taken while they were caught in the ice. If you look at the other pictures in the "Belgica"-set, you will see their attempt to carve their way out of the ice.
