Dole Air Race

Pilot Arthur V. Rogers standing in front of the Bryant Monoplane "Angel of Los Angeles" (reg. X705). The aircraft was constructed on behalf of famed architect Leland A. Bryant for entry in the Dole Air Race, which featured a $35,000 prize for the first non-stop flight from Oakland, California to Honolulu, Hawaii. On August 11 12, 1927, Bryant Rodgers would take "Angel of Los Angeles" up for a test flight from Western Air Field in Montebello, CA. Approximately two-miles from air field the aircraft reportedly nose-dived toward the ground. Witnesses reported Bryant Rogers (CORRECTED - see Stig Jarlevik's information below) jumping from the aircraft as it dove, but he was killed when his parachute failed to open.

The date seems to have been Aug 12th at least according to the newspapers, and not the 11th and it was of course the pilot Rogers who was killed. Stig

Surely it must a Breguet XIX (19)! Never seen this contraption before. Did it actually work? Is it possible to read the digits on the fin? Stig
