Colin Charles Wyllie (RNAS), aviator and navigator for Major James Conrad Peter Wood's (RAF) attempt to win the £10,000 prize offered by The Daily Mail (UK) to the first aviator(s) to successfully fly from any point in the U.S., Canada or Newfoundland (still a British colony at the time) to any point in Great Britain or Ireland within 72 hours. Here is a photo of Wood in the LoC Bain Collection: C.C. Wyllie and J.C.P. Wood's Short Shamrock (a modified Short Shirl torpedo bomber) departed Eastchurch, England at 3:15 p.m. on April 18, 1919, only to have their engine fail approximately four hours later, forcing them and their aircraft to ditch into the Irish Sea off of Holyhead. Both would be rescued.
