    This is mislabelled, Ernest Brown was born in 1877 which would make him 8 years old when this was taken. Brown moved to Edmonton from Newcastle in 1904.

    No, at the bottom of the photo it says copyright Ernest Brown (the notable Edmonton photographer). So this photo could not be from 1885.

    Actually, Brown himself inscribed his copyright onto this negative. But the date of the subject matter is correct. It's just that Brown asserted his rights to the picture as the holder of the negative, even though he didn't take it. Brown purchased the original negative collections of many prairie photographers, including pictures taken by Charles Wesley Mathers and the Calgary outfit Boorne and May; his images go back to the 1870s. This picture was one of Brown's favorites. The original negative is at the Provincial Archives of Alberta.
