There is a 'similar item' of a child (crawling over an adult?) with a railway and a wagon to the left as if the line was being built. The Connemara railway opened in 1895 after difficulties, so the 1891 date makes sense. beachcomber australia I think that streetview looks good, The 25" map draws a literal blank today, but on the 1930s Cassini 6", this is marked as a Quarry (Marble).

King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra visited in 1903 - via John Spooner. I think a few hundred metres down the hill - I wonder if these lads are in that crowd 11 years on - bet they were!

The (railway) company built a hotel at Recess, where King Edward VII and his party lunched in July 1903, during his tour of the congested districts of the West. Over the years the company advertising paid off, and the rich and famous came to Connemara to shoot and fish.

Per the DIA in 1897: The Recess hotel is now far advanced. The greater part of it had to be taken down and re-built. We are doing the whole work under the superintendence of Mr O'Neill, our own engineer. We have no architect for it, and from what I can learn I think it is going on just as well as if we had an architect.

The catalogue says "Sea, hills in background, small wooded promontory in middleground, high angle on small jetty, row boats in foreground", but I don't see any sign of tides, I think this is a lake.

The path at left looks suspiciously well laid out and surfaced - we may be in the grounds of a big house or demesne.
