Most useless dating evidence ever: in 1880 Mortimer's Plymouth Dyeing Works had already been established for 106 years, according to this advert in The Royal Cornwall Gazette Falmouth Packet, Cornish Weekly News, & General Advertiser (Truro, England), Friday, October 22, 1880

Here is the OS 25" map at GeoHive surveyed in 1898. The DIA says the National Bank (now BofI) is from 1866.

And in the interest of balance, from The Dundee Courier & Argus (Dundee, Scotland), Saturday, August 15, 1896:

and from The Yorkshire Herald, and The York Herald (York, England), Monday, November 04, 1895

Thomson's Dye Works sign

1901 census, Main Street: McCarthy is there, but no Gaynor, FitzGibbon, Corkery, or Curtin. There is a Dore, but a boarder and shop assistant, not a shopkeeper. 1911 Census, Main Street: James McCarthy is dead, but his widow Margaret is still in business. David Hartigan, shopkeeper, has a 10 year old stepson named Jerry Curtin. James Cahill has a 4 year old stepson named Cornelius Dore.

Nice dirty street. You need a pair of mr McDowell's boots.

And a tin bath or two to wash off in. Love the "garage" added to the carriage works, just to service those new fangled autos further down the street. Nearer to 1914 with those?

"Montgomery and Mathew carriage works, telephone 35" in 1910 directory. M'DOWELL, JOHN, Boot and Shoe Manufacturer. JOHNSTON, J. W., Watchmaker and Jeweller. www.libraryireland.com/UlsterDirectory1910/Ballymena-9.php

That is a rake of rakes..
