The aircraft serving as the backdrop to this photo is the Atlantic-Fokker C-2A named "?" ("Question Mark"), USAAC Serial Number 28-120, which, due to aerial refueling, was able to set an endurance flight record of over 150 hours from January 1 - January 7, 1929. The aircraft's commander (Carl "Tooey" Spatz) and crew of officers (Ira Eaker, Pete Quesada, and Harry Halverson) would go on to be important leaders of the US Army Air Force during the Second World War, and afterwards in the US Air Force. Agreed, looks like North American AT-6 Texan (or Harvard when in UK use).

@fulvue, yes, but those fin stripes make them AAF for sure. From this angle the viewer cannot ascertain if the gear is retractable - or not. But...because there are so many...AT-6 is a very safe guess!

Is the curved rudder more indicative of a BT-9 than the later AT-6 which had a straight edged rudder?

Good observation! I think you're right about the BT-9! This isn't a great pic - I would like to see the fabric on the fuselage...

Well, if this site is accurate: home.att.net/~jbaugher/thirdseries1.html it suggests the tail section on which they are working is from a Grumman TBF-1 Avenger.

The aircraft is a Curtiss SNC-1 Falcon.

At first I was unconvinced as I couldn't find any images of an SNC-1 showing that round access hatch, but I did finally find one at: www.wisbechaeroclub.co.uk/Scale Drawings/images/C/Curtiss SNC-1 Falcon/Curtiss SNC-1 Falcon (1).jpg although now I'm left confused about the tail number :)
