  These are amazing photos I am so happy they are on flickr now! The only older photos I have seen of the Lincoln Park Zoo are from postcards and they just are not as "real" as these are. Thanks!

  These photographs are of course historical, but also extremely emotional. Look at the faceless people glaring at this caged polar bear. It's surreal really. Beautiful but sad.

  Hi Gluecrue. There was indeed much controversy in his day as to whether Frederick Cook was the first person to reach the North Pole, or in fact did at all. The discussion surrounding Cook's activities (and Robert Peary, another Arctic explorer claiming to have reached the Pole) was widely covered by the newspapers during this time, and, if you're interested, can be explored further by searching for these men in the Chronicling America web site. See chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn85052114/1909-09-18/ed-... for an example of contemporary coverage of the controversy.
