Referring to the velodrome site, it was, since 1871, the site of Goodlet & Smith's Surry Hills Pottery works with its associated clay pits. The pottery works moved to the western suburbs in 1915. In late 1937, the old Canterbury Velodrome was demolished and reassembled as The Strawberry Hills/Surry Hills Velodrome, also known as Sydney Sports Arena. It was completed as an undercover velodrome in 1938. Sir Hubert Opperman (Oppy) attempted a world 24 hour unpaced record attempt here in 1940. The velodrome was again disassembled on the early 1950s and transported west when Larke & Hoskins assembly plant for Leyland vehicles was built on the site. This in turn disappeared when the site was taken over as part of the current Surry Hills Commission housing in the 1960s.
