There was a silk strike in Paterson, New Jersey in 1913 led by Lessig. Lessig and Haywood were subsequently convicted of being disorderly persons due to a large protest march which formed behind them. So, this composite photograph relates to that. Read some details here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paterson_Silk_Strike_of_1913 And their convictions were later overturned, according to this: query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9B00E4D8113CE633A... The Patterson in the caption may be amended to spelling Paterson in accordance with the "Paterson" inscribed on the negative.
