The name inscribed on the image ("Bottrell") is misspelled. Sgt. Ralph W. "Perry" Bottriell (US Army Air Service) (b. 1885 - d. 1943), tested experimental parachutes for the Air Service, including the first successful test of a free-fall backpack parachute on May 19, 1919. United States Army Aviators’ Equipment, 1917–1945, 1985, reprint 2015, by C.G. Sweeting, Page 122 - "Between January 1918 and January 1920, Bottriell made approximately 200 jumps from airplanes with various attached and free-type parachutes, including the Type "A." He became the premiere parachute jumper of the Army Air Corps during his distinguished service career. For his pioneering work and fearless, untiring effort in connection with the parachute, Sgt. Bottriell, then a master sergeant in charge of the Parachute Section at Kelly Field, Texas, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross on March 18, 1932."
