Appears to be Hornby Battery. Judging from photograph angle, it appears to be taken from the steps of Hornby Lighthouse. The blur in the lower right hand corner of the photo appears to the railing on the lighthouse. This is gun appears to be a 9 inch 12 ton Rifled Muzzle Loading (RML) manufactured in 1872. The smoke in distance appears to show the battery on Signal Hill being fired. You can see artillerymen near the RML gun. You can also clearly see the sunken pathways between the batteries. This emplacement was refurbished in 1939 and had BL Mark 7 guns placed there as part of Sydney's WWII defences. This emplacement survives to this day, albeit without any guns. The RML pictured could possibly be the very same gun near HMAS Watson.

orangetim - Good information! One of the WWII era guns survives. It crossed the harbour to Mosman. See it here: lifeasdaddy.typepad.com/lifeasdaddy/2008/03/the-big-gun-o...

Oh nice! I didn't know they kept any of the old 6in BL Mark 7 guns! Now, would that gun look nice back in it's original position!

Fascinating photograph. Please add to: Artillery where it will be a welcomed addition to the group.
