Is that a bottle of "a little something" in the helmet?
  • Vincenzo Diana said:
    bellissima!
  • Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums said:
Bryan# It would seem so, but can anyone identify what the "little something" could be?
  • inconclusive canvas said:
    I think it's cigarettes
  • Bryan# said:
Cigarettes - possibly - but why take them down a wet mine where they might get ruined and you could not smoke them. Anyone taking a match down a coal mine in the North East of England would be an absolute pariah. Too many men had died due to explosions of firedamp. The boiler on the left appears to be under a steam test with pressure gauge, water level sight glass and temporary regulator handle. A fascinating photograph.
  • Billy Embleton said:
Preassure testing yes, but with water. It was much safer.
