The prototype Travel Air 5000 "City of Oakland" came to rest on the island of Molokai after running out of gas. The aircraft was a write-off, but Smith and Bronte walked away from the crash-landing to become the first civilians to successfully fly the Pacific from the mainland to Hawaii. Their flight pre-dated the Dole race by over a month.

This is a photo of Ilio Point, Molokai. The five structures in the photo are the remains of the abandoned US Coast Guard LORAN station there. The station operated from 1952 to 1966. See: www.loran-history.info/molokai/molokai.htm
