Looking at Fricourt and Fricourt Wood

    Thank-you, an interesting photo for me. My Gt uncle Stephen was killed at those distant woods by "friendly fire" during the barrage before the battle commenced. The fighting must have been hellish. He was buried and then his remains were destroyed all over again before 1918 as the battle lines moved to & fro. He no longer had any remains and is one of the thousands to have only a gravestone.

    The 138th Infantry was one of four infantry regiments assigned to the 35th Division (originally made up of units from the Missouri and Kansas National Guard). The Division deployed to France in May of 1918.
