    That is not "from Darlinghurst", but from The Rocks looking south. Someone (I forget who or when) took a series of panoramas from the top of the newly built power house chimney, latterly the Earth Exchange museum. A great and interesting photo - any chance of higher res, please?

    Thanks State Records NSW for the large version - I can now see what everyone had for breakfast - Quaker Oats and Germea. It is terrific to be able to make out various familiar buildings from a birds eye view. The photographer I was thinking of is Melvin Vaniman who did a series of panoramas in 1904. I wonder if this photo is one of his? I think this is about that time - several Rocks areas are demolished post plague, and the 1904 Henry Bull building in Market Street is not evident - it would stick out like a sore thumb (see www.flickr.com/photos/powerhouse_museum/2414451497/ ).

    Me and my mum were trying to work this photo out just for interest and we thought the big clock could townhall clock, but it makes sense for it to be the GPO. What we are fascinated about it the big almost cathedral looking building to the right and you can also see smoke stacks in the background.
