Senator Joseph Bailey, a conservative Democrat from Texas, was in the news in 1911, as an investigation that year led to his resignation from the Senate. Wikipedia says: "His political career was tarnished by an assault against Senator Albert Beveridge, and subsequent investigations brought to light suspicious income and financial ties to the oil industry. The scandal led to his resignation in 1911." A Google search finds one source that agrees with Wikipedia, and gives the date of the resignation as September, 1911 -- but another says it took place on January 3, 1913 -- the date when his term would have expired naturally. Whenever the deed was done, it was the end of Bailey's political career.

LOC -- The man in the left photo is John L. Wortham, who was appointed to the Railroad Commission of Texas in 1911, and served until 1913. In 1913, he served five months as Texas Secretary of State. Not long after that, he and his son, Gus Wortham, started the John L. Wortham & Son insurance agency in Houston -- a big firm that is still in business. Wortham was an ardent supporter of Bailey in his political campaigns, and shared Bailey's leanings as a conservative Democrat, opposed to Prohibition, labor unions, and the progressive ("socialist") wing of the party. Wortham supported Bailey again when he ran for Governor of Texas (unsuccessfully) in 1920.
