Gentleman Cadet Charles Francis Ward was commissioned from the Royal Military Academy on 23rd December 1903. Is it possible that he was actually serving in 75th Brigade, Royal Artillery - in Direct Support of the 4th Guards Brigade and heavily engaged in the Battle of Festubert on 16th May 1915?//

CWGC website shows that Captain Ward was the son of Charles Ward, F.R.C.S., of Pietermaritzburg, South Africa; husband of Marjorie Ward. Mrs Ward applied for her husband's 1914 Star medal on 17th March 1920. At that time her address is given as Old Hill House, Westerham, Kent. Some details of his service in South Africa appear on 1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=192660

Australian National Maritime Museum on The Commons Small correction - the newspaper report describes the race as a "14 footer dingey [sic] handicap". The skipper was J. M. Firth.

beachcomber australia Yep, that's a 14ft dinghy, with four sails set. Even has the spinnaker clew sheeted to windward of the mast.
