  In the mild late autumn of 1938 no fewer than 68 different varieties of plants and shrubs were flowering in the garden, according to Mrs K Shirley, Lough Fea, Carrickmacross, in a letter to the London Times on 8th November. She thinks it must be some sort of record for somewhere so far north.

  There was an interesting article in the Examiner from 2012 explaining how most of the west side of Carrickmacross Main St. still belongs to the Shirley family.
