    Higgins made the flat-bottom boats used by the Americans for the Normandy invasion. The D-Day Museum in NOLA has a big exhibit about them.

    This appears to be one of the Higgins buildings on the Industrial Canal. The last of these buildings were torn down in the 60's.

    The book is "With the Jocks" A soldiers struggle for Europe 1944-45 by Peter White. White was an officer in the Kings Own Scottish Borderers or KOSB and they had been trained for mountain warfare! Thus trained and equipped to fight in the mountains of Europe they were sent to the Netherlands where they don't even have hills:-) Plus ca change and all that:-)

    The vessels are LCT 324 in the foreground and LCT 7094 behind it. These remained there until they were scrapped in September 1949. Approximate location is 51.5223° N 3.4422° E, looking south.
