>>"She is active in the Astronautical Society of the Pacific" This likely should be the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, in which Ms Schroedter was very active. She authored this report on the Society's June, 1962, meeting in Victoria, BC. (There are numerous adsabs.harvard.edu references to her ongoing activity in the Society.) While there is an American Astronautical Society, I couldn't find any reference to an Astronautical Society of the Pacific. Jacqueline L. Schroedter may also have attended Swathmore -- other than this unverified reference there's not much information about her I could find.  

Thanks, Pixel Wrangler. We double-checked the caption supplied by Lockheed which says clearly: “She is active in the Astronautical Society of the Pacific”. She was, indeed, active in the “Astronomical Society of the Pacific” (plenty of evidence of that in JSTOR) but there is also an organization (in which, given her employment at Lockheed, she is also likely to have participated) called the “American Astronautical Society.” So, it is probable that the public relations office at Lockheed either conflated the two societies or misunderstood what she told them. She just died last year; an obituary: articles.chicagotribune.com/2011-03-01/features/ct-met-re... She was featured in a recent fundraising campaign at her alma mater, North Central College: northcentralcollege.edu/x47826.xml And on a personal note, she was born exactly on the same day as my grandmother, 29 November 1919.

We recently found some old catalog cards for Harris & Ewing that had a caption for this photo. The caption for this photo should be: “UNCLE SAM HAS TURNED DISTILLER” In the campaign to outwit bootleggers and at the same times develop a non-poisonous denaturant for alcohol, the Prohibition Bureau has set up a modern copper still of miniature “commercial” proportions in the laboratory atop the United States Treasury building in Washington, to give severe practical tests to all tentative formulae. The business of this new still is do the same thing the bootlegger does--take the poison out of denatured alcohol but at the same time make it disagreeable to the taste. G.F. Beyer, chief chemist of the Prohibition Unit, is shown in the picture."
