Is there any record of when this was taken? My Dad worked there from 1945 to when he was killed there in 1966.

Regarding the headline on the Daily Sketch billboard..... The Pope made several speeches during the 1930s heavily criticising the fascist government in Italy. But I doubt that if of these speeches would have made the headlines in the UK. This is more likely to have been the headline on 13 February 1931. That day most newspapers reported on The Pope officially opening the Vatican's own radio station the day before, when the Pope's address was broadcast around the world for the first time. So his speech was not "astonishing" for its content, but by how it had been delivered. Journalistic hype even in the 1930s.

The Crooked House is a colloquial name for the Glynne Arms. A combination of nearby marl hole (clay quarry) and the underlying 30-foot seam of thick coal have led to subsidence contorting the building so great that pin-pong balls appear to roll uphill on the backs of the benches. Thus it has morphed from quarrymen's pub to a destination for dining and a walkers (and riders) drop in. It has a lovely warm fire on a winters day too! (I have no connection with publican or brewery...) . see also www.geograph.org.uk/photo/129423 I remember by granddad always wearing a black "wescut" and sleeves rolled up to the elbow. It was the universal Black Country look until the 1970s!
