I don't understand why the english Wikipedia entry of von Bernsdorff says that he was the German ambassador to the United States AND Mexico. It would be hard to understand that there was only one ambassador to both rather important countries. The german entry of von Bernstorff doesn't mention Mexico at all (only the U.S.). According to the Wikipedia list of German ambassadors to Mexico, the ambassadors there were Carl Gottlieb Bünz, Paul von Hintze and Heinrich von Eckardt at that time. So this cannot be true.

NYT of September 11, 1915 (date written on negative) select.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=F30716F83A5C1373... indicates that at the time, there was a concern about the Germans and Austrians "conspiring to cripple munitions factories" in the U.S., including causing disturbances at Charles M. Schwab's Bethlehem Steel. [Schwab and his wife both have pictures in this batch.] The Austrian ambassador had been asked to leave and this piece suggested that Bernstorff might suffer the same fate and that other staff of the German embassy certainly would. The article mentions that both the Austrian ambassador, Dumba and Schwab were at the St. Regis hotel, that Dumba and Bernstorff had dined at the Ritz-Carlton recently, and Bernstorff visited Dumba at the St. Regis. Clearly journalists were staked out outside the hotels. Presumably this picture was taken at some point during this affair.
