en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sidney_Bechet Drummer Freddie Moore is seen at left; he died at age 92 in 1992. Bechet's student Bob Wilber recalled that at Ryan's Bechet and pianist Lloyd Phillips would challenge each other by seeing who could remember the most obcure old tune, which they would then jam on beautifully.

[Portrait of George Brunis and Tony Parenti, Jimmy Ryan's (Club), New York, N.Y., ca. Aug. 1946] (LOC)

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Brunies en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tony_Parenti Two excellent New Orleans jazz veterans. I've heard stories that Parenti was also an excellent cook. Brunies was an amazing player, but full of superstitions. He refused to learn how to read music, since he had an older brother who died soon after learning to read music. In his later years he changed the spelling of his name to "Georg Brunis" in the belief that losing the "e"s would increase his luck through numerology.
