The Gould family's nomenclature was a bit odd, and might have confused the Bain captioner. I believe this photo depicts Helen Gould's brother, George Jay Gould I (1864-1923) and his son George Jay Gould II (1888-1935.) Family patriarch Jason "Jay" Gould (1836-1892) named none of his sons Jason, but gave both George and Frank the middle name Jay, so there actually was no Jay Gould, Jr.. George Jay Gould II was sometimes referred to as Jay Gould II. Correction: The odd Gould nomenclature has tripped me up, too. Jay Gould II (1888-1935) and George Jay Gould II (b 1896) were two different sons of George Jay Gould I. This photo must depict Jay Gould II, since it was taken in 1913 when Jay II would have been about 25, and George Jay II about 17. Or could this possibly be the two sons, rather than the father and older son? Neither of these guys looks to be pushing fifty.

George Gould (George Senior, son of the robber baron), had two sons, George (George Junior) and Jay (Jay II), and my bet is that these are the brothers in this photo. Thanks to all for attempts at identifying the somewhat confusing - and extended - Gould family! It seems most likely these are George Jay Gould II (or George Jay Gould, Jr.) and Jay Gould II. We will expand this description when we update the record.

My name is Leonard J Gould and I am the great-great-grandson of Jay Gould. There is a serious error in the accounting here about my grandfather, George Jay Gould II. The birth and death dates given are for Jay Gould II (great tennis star) NOT George Jay Gould II, who was NOT a great tennis star! I am not aware for sure of my grandfather's date of birth, but I know for absolute certainty that he died in the winter or spring of 1963, in France. He married and divorced Laura Carter and married a woman named Louise Jacqueline (last name unknown) who died in 1992 in Cannes, France (and who we knew as Jacqueline). I hope this helps and if someone wants to verify and CORRECT this record I'd be grateful. George II had four sons, two (George, my father, and Maughan) by Laura and two (Howard and Patrick) by Jacqueline. I am here looking for some information because we have just been informed by legal counsel from Paris that Patrick, my uncle, passed away days ago in Europe.
