  i can remember when every drive in the country resulted in dead insects in the grille — to the point of interfering with cooling on some occasions — and all over the windscreen, resulting in someone being assigned to scrape them off at the service station
  
  this was only about 50 years ago. those days are gone now, and while we may be ‘cleaner’, we’re the poorer for it

  bill doyle agreed. A drive from London to Devon used to need at least 2stops to clean the windscreen. Now no more.

  Now, I didn't know a 55mm lens from a .50 cal. machine gun, back in 1960, but I have never seen a macro lens ( which he would need to shoot something like a mantis closeup) that looked anything like that. If anything, it resembles my first (1969) 500mm telephoto. If the actual target was an osprey nest in the Everglades, he might have a lens like that, but not for a bug. I have a feeling that Mr. Marks was hamming it up for the camera in this shot. Even if he isn't clowning, his helmet makes him look like an official photographer for the North Vietnamese Army.
