Son of James Herbert and Edith Gertrude Farmer, of "Fairfield," Mundesley, Norfolk.

Ypres (Menin Gate) memorial, panel 5 and 9

Probably killed during the First Battle of Ypres 19 Oct-22 Nov 1914. Between the actions at Gheluvelt, a German attack to break through between Hytschaete and Messines, and a final attempt to take Ypres from along the line of the Menin Road, by 1st November both British and German forces in this area had taken desperately high casualties and fought themselves to a point of exhaustion. 4th November 1914 is described as a day of menaces rather than attacks, nevertheless 2nd Division, of which XLI Arty Bde RFA was a part, was subjected to increasingly heavy German shelling.

9th Field Battery was a Regular RFA battery based in peacetime 1914 in Bordon, Hampshire - with 16 Field Battery and 17 Field Battery formed XLI Artillery Brigade which on 4 Nov 14 was commanded by Lt Col Stephen Lushington RA (born 1864 and educated at Eton). XLI Bde RFA arrived in France in August 1914, fought with distinction extracting 4th Guards Bde at Villers-Cotteret on 1 Sep 14 although 'under an infernal fire', and again supporting 2nd Bn Worcestershires at Polygon Wood at the end of October.//

Classic

James Douglas Herbert Farmer, a Gentleman Cadet at the Royal Military Academy, was Commissioned into the Royal Regiment of Artillery as a Second Lieutenant in the Regular Army on 13th July 1913. London Gazette 28747 of 19 Aug 1913.//

As well as appearing on the Roll of Honour in All Saints, Mundesley, there is a separate plaque commemorating the loss just inside the church door.

The picture has what looks like a clipping attached,

Underneath is a hand-written note - “Gazetted July 1913”.

James Douglas Herbert has an entry in De Ruvigny’s but not in the two volumes I have a copy of.

Frederick Spencer Herbert, initially Second Lieutenant than Lieutenant, 3rd Battalion attached 2nd Battalion, Norfolk Regiment before becoming a Lieutenant with the 17th Special Battalion , (which is a new unit on me and doesn’t appear in any of the normal lists).

Charles Robert Herbert, initially Second Lieutenant, 15th Hussars before becoming a Lieutenant in the 18th Hussars and attached to the Motor Machine Gun Section.

No obvious candidate for the Naval Officer either in the normal service or the Volunteer Reserve..

As we have a George Adderley Herbert on the 1911 census, he would be a prime candidate for the Honourable Artillery Company man. There is a George A H Farmer who was Private 12420 Honourable Artillery Company Infantry.

Wikipedia includes a photo in O'Connell Street labelled: The inauguration of Seán T. O'Kelly as President of Ireland in 1945. The 2nd Cavalry Squadron of the Blue Hussars escort the President, who travelled in the late Queen Alexandra's landau. The Landau and the Hussars were later scrapped which may explain why I never heard of them before.

It escorted the President of Ireland on state occasions, most famously to and from presidential inaugurations between 1938, when the first president took office, and 1948 when the Escort was disbanded.Seven photographs of the procession of president Sean T. O'Kelly on his inauguration. So the route was Dublin Castle, up O'Connell Street and then presumably North Circular Road? (Or some shorter but windier route) to the Phoenix Park.

Yes, in NPA OKE/65 they are turning from Berkeley Road onto the NCR. So Castle, College Green, O'Connell St. Parnell Square, Berkeley St/Rd, NCR, todays shot at Hanlon's Corner and into the Phoenix Park.
