    This is Deborah Bay. I'm still looking into the ships that are named. The Don Juan was definitely sent there as her final resting place.

    Here's some more information; The Don Juan had been renamed the Rosalia. She entered Port Chalmers in November of 1874. It turned out she was a literal death trap. She had been ordered to make certain repairs and then had changed hands. A new Crew was taken on and an attempt made to leave the harbour. She was stopped at the heads. The vessel was condemned as unseaworthy and later taken to Deborah Bay to be broken up. She is referred to in White Wings as being 'an ex-slaver' www.nzetc.org/tm/scholarly/tei-Bre02Whit-t1-body-d2-d3-d4...     What a wonderful picture, though I am more interested in the buildings in the background than the Pomp and Circumstance in the foreground. I wonder if it was taken from the roof of the Customs House or the Thomas Mort building? I have been trying to find out about the "bald-faced building" recently on two State Records NSW photos - www.flickr.com/photos/state-records-nsw/3683566752/ and www.flickr.com/photos/state-records-nsw/2715092837/ . I thought it was a Fire Station because of the doors, or was it part of the old Sydney Harbour Trust Building? Extraordinary looking. Maybe it was a victim of the 1890's recession, hence the incomplete facade for at least three years.

    Thank you for pointing out that the Commissariat Store was still there. There was also another tall building at the Quay - from left to right, the Thomas Mort store, then Customs House, then the tallest building on today's Gateway site.

    Using Google Earth 3D (wow!), I figured out this is from Northbridge, looking NE towards Seaforth and Manly. Then it was quite easy to find out about 'Clavering' (now Dalwood Home) and the hulk ships in Powder Hulk Bay, using this history of Seaforth - www.manly.nsw.gov.au/IgnitionSuite/uploads/docs/History%2... . A construction date of the house should be the date of this photo.

    She was a beautiful ship, built 1896, "the first true five-masted schooner built on the West Coast."
