  The photo is likely from the 1880s or 1890s latest. The pier in the centre was demolished around 1902 when the area in front of it was reclaimed.

  Thanks for pointing that out motohakone. Bain sometimes copied earlier photos, so our date represents when Bain copied it to a negative. I will see if we can add note saying it was taken earlier.

  About the location: the pier is at the former Wellington Battery, the buildings on the right are Wellington and Victoria Barracks (both Army), Left is the the Naval Yard (first location).
