This isn't just any old Sopwith Camel. This is one of the Camels built under contract by Boulton & Paul of Norwich, directly under contract to the USAS. It has the 160hp Gnome Monosoupape engine, which caused B&P no end of trouble to mate with the Camel. The engine was much longer than the Le Rhone, Clerget and Bentley engines the Camel was originally designed for - and the gubbins behind the firewall obstructed the pilot's rudder movement! B&P's solution was to move the engine forward - which must have trashed the Camel's delicate centre of gravity and seriously upset its handling. This one is in the markings of 41 USAS. AndyK
