    An extremely wealthy and well-connected New York family. Edward Ringwood Hewitt (1866–1957), inventor, chemist and an early expert on fly-fishing. He published Telling on the Trout, among other books. He married Mary Ashley in 1892. www.ringwoodmanor.org/edward-ringwood-hewitt.html He was the son of Abram Hewitt, a mayor of New York but "best known for his work with the Cooper Union, which he aided Peter Cooper [his father-in-law) in founding in 1859, and for planning the financing and construction of the New York City subway, for which he is considered the "Father of the New York City Subway System"). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abram_Hewitt.
    An illustrated newspaper article about the Hewitts and daughters Lucy and Candace appeared in the New York Sun and Herald in February, 1920, on the occasion of Lucy's engagement. It discusses the family's Wewappo Farm in Midvale, NJ, probably the site of this photo and the women's military training camp pictured.

    We have used the presence or absence of tram horses to date many a photo over the years. Today can we focus a little on the working conditions for tram horses back then. We have seen photos of tramway buildings and power stations, but I do not think we have ever seen a Tramway stables or other infrastructure associated with the horses.
