One of ten houses burned down on January 12th 1887. The tenants owed rents over a long period but had nothing to pay it so they were homeless in the depth of winter. The landlord Winn was broke, having no rents and having squandered a great deal. His title passed to Rowland Allinson Winn, Lord Headley. He had been an engineer in India and became a Muslim. He was the first Muslim to sit in the House of Lords, styling himself as Sheikh Ramatullah al Farouq. Incidentally, the original landlord had built a castle which is still to be seen and known as Winn's Folly; for though servants stayed in it for a time it was never really habitable. The reason is that the architect who had already designed Dromore Castle was head over heels in love with the actress Ellen Terry and found it difficult to think straight. There's plenty of similar wreckage round Mountain Stage station as well, of course. You can't get streetview into it, though.

The "Similar items" in the NLI catalogue imply that Mr French visited after the railway line and station were opened in 1893. This hotel was mentioned by Samuel Carter Hall in A Week in Killarney (1858) and it is said to have been known as a hotel in 1840. Slater's Commercial Directory named only three hotels in Tralee and three in Killarney in 1846 and Carter Hall named one hotel and a comfortable inn in Waterville in 1858, by which time there were seven hotels in Killarney. They were named and their positions given by Fraser in 1854. Some day the Tourist Board should write the history of tourism in Kerry.

Slater's Directory noted the hotels in Killarney and Tralee which were Post Houses as well and he gave the times the post carriages left for destinations such as Cahersiveen. Cahersiveen was an important destination for commerce and a great deal of the Glenbeigh Hotel's business would have come from being a Half Way House on the way from both Tralee and Killarney. Lawrence would have known very well that he was in Glenbeigh but he possibly titled this picture in a slightly slipshod and hasty way.
