The Sunday Oregonian, March 25, 1917, SECTION FIVE, Image 70 printed a cropped version of this photo with the caption: "Alexandra Stappert is a German girl, late of Bryn Mawr, whom German agents tried to silence when she lectured on the conditions in Germany. She was sent here as a student under a fellowship provided with American money. Dr. Karl Bertling, a German agent, tried to persuade her to stop talking about Germany and then Dr. John A. Mandel of the New York University, wrote a letter to a government official in Berlin, enclosing it in one to Stockholm, reporting her activities. The British censor got the letter. Miss Stappert resigned from Bryn Mawr when relations with Germany were broken off at Washington and has been supporting herself as a governess." oregonnews.uoregon.edu/lccn/sn83045782/1917-03-25/ed-1/se...
