  I think the good folks at Bain might have been confused by an abundance of Florences. This is not the same Florence that took part in the September 1916 naval exercises. That one was a 45' Elco built (in 1914) boat owned by Matthew Rock. Rock's Florence was the Flagship of group C in the exercises. I don't think this is the SP-173 Florence. It's about the same size - 124' (overall) Herreshoff designed/built yacht launched in 1902 as the Quickstep but the number/alignment of portholes and hawsepipes doesn't quite match (this boat has 7 portholes aft of the stack, SP-173 has 6) I think it more closely resembles a photo of the 154' Florence launched in 1914 for Ludwig Thorwald Petersen (1875-1955) Commodore of the . . . Atlantic Yacht Club. Petersen, who was in the rubber business in Ohio sold that boat in late 1916 to Julian Detmer. Petersen seems to have disappeared from the yachting news after that. This Florence did not see duty during WWI but Detmer did sell her to the Navy in 1942. She was renamed the USS Iolite (PYc-24, then YP-454). She was damaged in an explosion in 1944 and sold off in 1945. Side note: "Florence" made the top ten most popular names for baby girls in the 1890s and 1900s

  Baron Zdenko Von Dworzak, former physician to the court of Wilhelm II, married Eleanor Parke Custis Lewis; they lived in Florence, Italy. He was her second husband; he first husband was Thomas Peck (thus the name confusion by the original captioner).
