This appears to have been taken at Bala - compare what can be seen of the footbridge with www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1745327 ; www.flickr.com/photos/the-evanses/8415072822/ is a view from the opposite direction showing the water tower. More on this enthusiasts' special train, with more photos: www.sixbellsjunction.co.uk/60s/610122sl.html . Closure of the line was triggered by the decision to build the reservoir at Tryweryn (cf. www.flickr.com/photos/llgc/10977794533/in/photostream/ !); a deviation was considered but was deemed too expensive. The last regular passenger train had run on 2 January 1960 (a Saturday) with official passenger closure effective from 4 January 1960; freight closure took place on 28 January 1961, apart from traffic from Trawsfynydd power station, which was handled over a new connection to the ex-L&NWR lines at Blaenau [Peter E. Baughan, A regional history of the railways of Great Britain : North and Mid Wales (1980), p.132; Rex Christiansen, Forgotten railways: North and Mid Wales (1976), pp.60, 130].

The first Fairlie locomotive ever built. These articulated steam locomotives were well-suited to the Ffestiniog line, but met with less success elsewhere. The railway still uses them (not this one, but newer examples).
