    May 8, 1914 has not been an eruption of Mount Etna, but a violent earthquake. A violent shock to the almost total destruction of the town of Linera and neighboring villages (Cosentini, Mortara and Passopomo) in the lower eastern slopes of Etna. The victims were seventy.

    Thanks Massimo1989, it was an earthquake. I found a few old newspaper stories that said a new crater or crack in appeared in Mt. Etna and lava could be seen, but I didn't see anything saying the volcano itself destroyed anything.

    Seth you are right, these ruins are indeed related to an earthquake. We can't be sure but the picture was certainly taken after May the 8th 1914 earthquake by the Etna volcano (Sicily - Italy) Unfortunately all our caption are in French only and they are not complete. We are working on completing all these captions for the 1836 pictures of this collection. As soon as we will be finished with that, all of them will be translated to English for a better understanding. You can help ! You can help "tagging" these pictures ! You can help us translating the caption to English ! By the way Jean, you are right about the "awful reality of war" that must not be forgotten. It is indeed one of the reasons why we wished to share all this collection on this very particular and meaningful program : The Commons on Flickr.
