William Boehmer teaching Seminole children at the government school: Brighton Reservation, Florida

  • Pixel Wrangler said:
William D. Boehmer (d.1991) and his wife, Mary "Edith" (née Meier) (d.1990), came to the Brighton Indian Reservation in 1938, from the Sioux Country, South Dakota, to teach Seminole children in a school that was yet to be built. [1] In a story reminiscent of "Stand and Deliver", William Boehmer recounts in an oral history how he started with eight children, ages eight to sixteen, and sometimes had only one student in attendance for months at a time — to attaining 100% enrollment with 96% average attendance; with the first Seminole child (Joe Dan) to graduate High School, and Billy Cyprus, the first Seminole to graduate college -- who then returned to teach school.
