Although the spelling varied at first, the name became Princes Street.
  • The Library of Congress said:
Thanks! Added the primary spelling for "Princes Street."

The street was never known as Princess Street and would only ever have been written that way in error (a common and easy mistake right enough). It was named after the sons of George III, the British monarch at the time of the New Town's construction in the 1760s. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Town,_Edinburgh

Hi, I'm an admin for a group called Literary Scotland, and we'd love to have this added to the group!

This brought such a smile to my face! I'd love to see it beside a shot from exactly the same spot now.

Wow. Presumably that's Calton Gaol in the foreground? Closest modern shot I could find through a cursory Flickr search is this.

This photograph has been discussed in the Flickr Commons group in Edinburgh: Then & Now This is the shot that gave me the inspiration to do the project : )

It's Princes Street, not princess (ie male, not female). Nice collection mind.

Wow--my wife and I got our wedding rings in a shop that would have been on the right side of this photo--though it *probably* wasn't there when the photo was taken ;) Also, in other photos it actually is described as (and spelled) "Princess Street." Perhaps it used to be called that?
  • Andrew Hogg said:
No, it was named after two Princes.
  • The Library of Congress said:
Thanks for the road repair tip! Added the main spelling to the title.
