What a wonderful shot! Aside from the compelling subject matter, this is an outstanding example of image quality to have survived all this time.

Dublin Zoo is one of the worlds most successful breeders of Lions. At the time of this shot, they were housed in old style Victorian cages inside the Russell House, - a lovely building in itself. Their space was quite small, and you could get very close to the big cats. Thats when Zoos were for people, now Zoos are for animals.
