Great, that is Osnabrück, Lower Saxony. North Germany. Part of the old town, left side the old cathedral, Kleine Domsfreiheit, theater, Große Straße, the river Hase, Herrenteichswall, Herz-Jesu Church.

I used to live in Utrecht several years ago now, and am trying to work out if this view is looking east or west along the canal... Can anyone help me work it out? Where's the present day post office in relation to these buildings? thanks :-)

I guess the picture was taken somewhere near the actual Lange Viestraat/Potterstraat; the post office is on the left - looking to the (south-)east.

Fine line: You are looking east. The building on the left-front is nowadays the MacDonalds. The street next to it gets you to 'de Neude' which is the square in front of the (former) post office. The white building in the back middle is the town hall. the bridge in the front has the merchants selling their flowers on Saturday. The second building on the right is now departmentstore HEMA.
