the title is missing an H, it is ChisHolm, which I suspect is related to the iron ore mines in Chisholm, MN. (what we call "The Iron Range" or more often, just "the Range") I couldn't find any stories of a rescue/disaster during this time, though there was one in 1922. It's possible this device was developed locally or there was a photo of a rescue at the mine.

It may also be related to K. H. Chisholm, inspector of United States Bureau of Mines. The Morning Oregonian. (Portland, Or.) 1861-1937, September 06, 1918, Image 7., col. 5 "Inspector May Go Abroad" reported that he was directing the installing of safety devices at the Beaver Hill mines. According to the Bisbee daily review., January 20, 1916, Page 8, col. 5, "FIRST AID METHODS AND MINE RESCUE WORKS ARE TAUGHT", he was in the mine rescue department and superintended U. S. Mine-Rescue Car No. 2.

Thanks B-59 for your interesting research on K.H. Chisolm, the US Bureau of Mines inspector who was working with mine safety issues. We can add that the image is possibly related to his work.

The ingenuity that goes into the creating of a ship, both then and now, is something to behold.

Hard to say exactly, but an inexperienced man wouldn't have been allowed to operate the controls when moving the ship around in port. So more than likely one of the 2nd engineers, while the Chief Engineer coordinated the work of all the Engine Room Staff.

They certainly don't make them like that anymore.

I have done some instrument tubing in gas plants, and the tubing here is very well done considering they likely didn't have the benders that we use today.
